Water Quality Testing Gold Coast: What’s in Your Home’s Water?
We use water every day for drinking, cooking, cleaning and bathing. Yet many homeowners give little thought to its quality until something changes.
An unusual taste, discoloured water or recurring stains around taps can raise questions about what’s coming through your plumbing. Other water quality concerns may have no obvious signs at all.
At Pure IQ, we help homeowners understand the environmental conditions within their property, including the quality of the water they use every day.

Why Water Quality Matters
Water quality involves more than how water looks or tastes. It includes its chemical, physical and microbiological characteristics, and whether it is suitable for its intended use.
It is also useful to distinguish between a health concern and an issue affecting taste, appearance or plumbing performance. The Australian Drinking Water Guidelines address both health and aesthetic considerations. An unpleasant taste does not automatically mean water is unsafe, while clear water alone cannot confirm its safety. Australian Government water quality guidance
Understanding the cause helps you decide what action, if any, is needed.
1. Changes in Taste, Smell or Colour
A noticeable change in your water is a reason to investigate.
You might notice:
A metallic or unfamiliar taste
An unusual smell
Brown or discoloured water
Particles or sediment
These observations do not identify a particular contaminant on their own. If you suspect contamination in your town water supply, contact your water supplier first. Queensland Health recommends this as the starting point for concerns about reticulated drinking water. Queensland Health
2. Plumbing Can Influence Water Quality
The condition of your property’s plumbing can affect the water reaching your tap.
Some plumbing materials and fittings can release metals into drinking water. Lead, for example, can leach from products containing lead, with factors such as water chemistry and the time water sits in the pipes influencing the amount released.
This does not mean every older home has a contamination problem. It does mean that plumbing history can be useful when deciding whether targeted testing is appropriate. Australian Drinking Water Guidelines: Lead
3. Staining and Scale Around Fixtures
Recurring marks around sinks, taps and appliances can provide clues about your water.
Blue or green staining may be associated with copper corrosion. Scale inside kettles or hot water systems can be associated with elevated water hardness.
These issues deserve investigation, but staining or scale alone cannot establish whether drinking water presents a health risk. Testing can help clarify the cause before you spend money on treatment or plumbing changes. Australian Drinking Water Guidelines: Water quality beyond the point of supply
4. Rainwater Tanks Need Ongoing Attention
If your home relies on tank or bore water, managing that private supply is your responsibility.
Rainwater systems can be affected by conditions around the collection area, storage tank and associated pipework. Flooding or storm damage can also create contamination concerns.
If floodwater has entered your rainwater tank, or contamination is suspected, Queensland Health advises against using the water for drinking or personal hygiene. Use a known safe alternative and seek advice about restoring the system. Queensland Health: Drinking water during and after a disaster
How Water Quality Testing Can Help
Useful testing starts with a clear question.
Are you investigating an unusual taste? Checking a private water supply? Concerned about metals from plumbing?
Depending on your water source and the issue being investigated, testing may include:
Microbiological indicators such as E. coli
Metals such as lead or copper
pH and mineral characteristics
Other chemicals relevant to the property or water source
The testing scope should suit the concern. A basic screening test cannot check for every possible contaminant, and results describe the sample collected at that time. Queensland Health offers different analyses according to the water source and suspected issue. Queensland Health: Water testing
